United Overseas Bank

In 1995 I left the Telecommunications Authority of Singapore (TAS) and joined UOB (United Overseas Bank). I spent four years there before the birth of my first son and subsequent move as a family back to the UK.

For the first two years, reporting to the project's software development manager, Jeff De Luca, I led one of two software development teams on a distributed, object-oriented, client/server project using C++.

The second two years was largely spent leading the development team on a client/server system built with Java.

At the time United Overseas Bank Group was one of the four leading banks in Singapore and the group consisted of four banks and a number of subsiduary companies.

The banks in Singapore have undergone a perod of mergers and consolidation. UOB still remains but has swallowed some of its competitors including the confusingly named OUB (Overseas Union Bank).

UOB has one of the most impressive office building in Singapore. Located on the riverside at Raffles Place, UOB Plaza One is over sixty storeys high. At the top there is a two storey penthouse used by the bank for VIP functions. The view from the penthouse over the city (left) and along the East Coast (below) is spectacular.
